Hilton Fort Worth

Jan 11

Hilton Forth Worth, formerly the Hotel Texas, is where President Kennedy spent the last night of his life. The next morning he gave a speech in the parking lot followed by another speech in the Crystal Ballroom before making the short flight to Dallas where he would be assassinated.

Just outside the Crystal Ballroom are a myriad of black and white framed pictures of the President’s visit to Hotel Texas that are definitely worth a look.

The hotel itself is in fantastic shape and looks marvelous for being built in the early 1920’s. It is decorated with an understated elegance and some of the public areas look much like they did in the 60’s when President and Mrs. Kennedy visited including the front doors and windows. It is an odd feeling to know you are stepping exactly where Present Kennedy did shortly before his death.

We found the front desk staff to be very professional and friendly but the valet service could use some finesse. The valet staff often parks cars in such a way that someone waiting in their car to pass through is stuck for a long period of time.

Our guest room provided ample space, the bed was exceedingly comfortable, and the decor appeared recently updated.

The bathroom was spacious, clean, and high quality toiletries were provided.

Behind the front desk is a neat little gift shop with unique, JFK themed items. Drinks and snacks are also available for purchase. Connected to the lobby is a Starbucks and a Ruth’s Chris but I don’t recommend this steak house if you like your steak medium-well since mine came out dreadfully dry. The first floor also has Café Texas which offers a breakfast buffet for a fee.

Room service is a little pricey but worth it. Our food arrived in under 30 minutes, was filling and had excellent flavor. The second floor of the hotel has a small bar called Skylight Court Bar that has an almost identical food menu to that of the room service menu. It is a relaxed area to sit and chat in the evening and enjoy the free chips and salsa they put out between 5-7pm.

The Hilton Fort Worth provides a step back in history that is fascinating but also creates a sense of gloom. It is sad indeed to think that President and Mrs. Kennedy were in this very hotel the night before the assassination. For the full experience, travel to Dealey Plaza the next morning. It is a 45 minutes drive from the hotel. (For a review of Dealey Plaza and Museum, click here.)
