Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course

Aug 13

Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course is located in the heart of Pennsylvania. It doesn’t attract the big city players, but it’s as good as just about any casino not found on the Vegas strip (and better than many of those!). And this has something those casinos lack: live thoroughbred horse racing.

The casino itself is typical of the newer Hollywood Casinos. There are plenty of table games, hundreds of slots and an ample poker room. While it brings in solid crowds on the weekends, the daytime table limits remain reasonable, as low as $5 at some tables. It’s not until the evening rolls around that limits go up to $15 or more.

The casino looks great. It’s bright and bold. There’s plenty of room for gambling and numerous restaurants. The one major downside is that smoking is permitted. Many of the restaurants are flanked by a large “No Smoking” section of slots, but even there, it’s hard to miss the smell.

But that is all just half of the attraction. Penn National was a thoroughbred race track long before it was a casino. Their afternoon race card stretches into the evening. You can expect 10 to 12 races on a card. There is both trackside betting outside and either box or restaurant seating with betting inside. If you just like betting the ponies for fun, this is a great place to do it. If you’re looking for races with big purses and top horses, you’re going to be disappointed.

There are numerous food choices for when you’re not gambling. There is your typical casino buffet. There are the quick options including pizza and grill options like hot dogs and hamburgers. And there is a sports bar up stairs along with the trackside restaurant. The latter offers convenient betting options, but a menu that I would consider overpriced.

If you’re looking for a fun place to spend a weekend and you enjoy both casino gaming and betting on ponies, Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course is a great option!
